SAN DIEGO - Each day during training camp, the Cowboys' defensive coaches exhort their charges to register take-aways.
"Go get the ball," they shout regularly.
On Saturday night, it was clear those pleas have not fallen on deaf ears.
The defense recorded three take-aways in the 16-14 win over San Diego, increasing optimism that there won't be a repeat of last season, when the Cowboys tied for the fifth-lowest number of take-aways in the league with 21.
"We are trying to get the ball out," linebacker Bradie James said after the game. "We try to work on it every day. People have been asking us how we can improve. It's creating turnovers. If we wouldn't have gotten any turnovers, we wouldn't have won the game - hands down, point blank, period."
The three take-aways matched the Cowboys' total for the entire four-game preseason schedule last year. Through three preseason games this year, they have eight take-aways.
